Cullen Kilshaw sponsor Craig Howie

With four events in the professional Challenge Tour now under his belt Craig Howie from Peebles Golf Club has already found his way into the prize money. In his second event Craig carded a very respectable two under par which earned him a tied 35th place finish and his first prize money for the 2019 season.

Craig is delighted to announce that Cullen Kilshaw, the largest solicitor estate agency firm in the Scottish Borders, have signed up to be his main sponsor for the next two years. Craig has also recently signed with former Open Champion Paul Lawrie’s 5Star Sports Agency, meaning that along with sponsors Stobo Castle and Cullen Kilshaw Craig is well on his way to securing the financial backing required for this season. With funding for travel and logistics in place Craig is focussing on his events and performance to hopefully secure that first win on this year’s European Challenge Tour.

“I am really pleased to have the support of Cullen Kilshaw for the next two years and I feel proud to be a part of their team. Cullen Kilshaw have been a large supporter of Peebles Golf Club for a number of years now and I am delighted they have extended that support further as I try to climb up the professional ladder.”

Cullen Kilshaw, now run by founding partner David Kilshaw and his son Ross Kilshaw, have signed up to be Craig’s main sponsor for the next two years. Both David and Ross are golfers from Peebles who have watched as Craig has come up through the excellent youth development system at Peebles Golf Club before moving on to an exceptional spell in the amateur ranks, representing his country at various levels and then winning the Pro Golf Tour last year at his first attempt.

David Kilshaw comments “When we all sat down recently to have a chat about how Cullen Kilshaw might support Craig in the coming season, Ross and I were hugely impressed with Craig’s professionalism and quiet determination. His pursuit of excellence and his aspiration to get the best out of himself are very much a reflection of our own attitude to our business, and we were delighted to be able to support Craig in this very exciting venture”.

With offices in seven of the main Borders towns Cullen Kilshaw is the largest solicitor estate agency in the region. Cullen Kilshaw provide sponsorship in all of the towns in which they operate, including sponsoring the flagship Thorburn Cup tournament at Peebles Golf Club for a number of years. David Kilshaw adds “Almost all of our clients and our staff are from the Borders, and we are pleased to be in a position to support a number of Borders clubs and sports teams with which we have had an association going back over many years. If we can play our small part in helping Craig to achieve his dream of establishing himself as a Borders based professional golfer competing against the best in the world, that would be a splendid achievement. We wish Craig all the best on the Challenge Tour, and we have every confidence that he will do us all proud.”

A Tribute to Kenny Wells

It is with deep sadness that we have our flag at half mast today following the news that JK Wells passed away in Australia this morning.

Kenny was one of the club’s great characters and without doubt one of the most talented players in the club’s history. He won the Club Championship five times in a row between 1968 and 1972, and was also Borders champion on three occasions. One of his finest victories came in the 1978 South East District Championship, beating some of the country’s leading amateur golfers, and was twice a winner of the Thorburn Cup.

He was the life and soul of the party and was a stalwart of the old clubhouse bar, enjoying more than a few beers, debates and the celebratory filling of his many trophies. Many members will have their own fantastic memories and stories of their times with Kenny, in battles on the course and nights out in the bar and he will be very fondly remembered by the crop of juniors and kids growing up at the club in the early 80s.

He was a very welcome guest to the club on his trips ‘home’ with his wife Mags after emigrating to Australia, with his most recent visit just last year (usually shivering in his shorts!).

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Margaret, Suzie, David, Jenny, grandson Gregor and the rest of the family at this very sad time.

RIP JK Wells…a true club legend.

New Secretary & Admin Team Appointments

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Alan Frain as our new part time Club Secretary, starting on Tuesday June 11th. Alan will assume executive responsibility for the day-to-day management, financial control and operations of the club, and will work closely with the Board on broader strategic matters including the development of the Club’s annual business plan and budget.

After serving for over 30 years with the Bank of Scotland in various senior roles, Alan brings a wealth of business and leadership experience to the Club. Alan is a keen golfer and has been an enthusiastic member of Peebles since moving to the town a number of years ago.  He has also been involved in other sport within our community, as a volunteer coach for the youth section of Peebles Football Club.

Alan will replace the outgoing Martin Kelso as Club Secretary, who will stay with us until the end of June to enable a smooth transition and handover.  Martin has been a valuable servant to the Club over the years and we wish him a very happy ‘retirement!’

Continuing our theme of new faces, we have two new part time administration staff joining the office in the next two weeks, Pamela Sherrard and Sarah Waldie.  Sarah joins us on 12th June from ARK and previously Holland & Sherry, where she has served as Credit Controller, while Pamela moves from Edinburgh University’s Roslin Institute, where she worked as a Legal Administrator and will start at the Club this Wednesday.  As we welcome our new staff in, we say our goodbyes to Mandy Roger who leaves us on June 21st.  Mandy has done a fantastic job for the Club since she joined us last year and I’m sure our members will miss her friendly face around the clubhouse. We wish Mandy all the best in her new role.

With the aforementioned changes in place, the Board has decided not to re-hire a full-time Club Manager going forward.  This will save the Club money in the face of tough trading conditions, but at the same time we are confident that our new team will continue to serve our members, visitors and guests to the same standards and level of service that the Club attains to.

I mention the challenges facing us right now - these are industry wide of course and Peebles isn’t immune to them unfortunately.  With an ageing golf population and changing lifestyles, the Club has lost a number of members again this season - and this has also contributed to a broader decline in bar and other revenues.  As we face up to this, your Club needs you more than ever.  For the size of our membership, we have a relatively small group of volunteers, and so we could always do with more. It doesn’t need to involve being on a committee – just lending a few hours a month in your chosen area of expertise or trade; offering a few hours of help at a competition, or putting yourself forward for the social sub-committee, would go a long way to ensuring the club has enough hands on deck to do things we all want the club to do. Don’t always assume someone else is going to do it! It’s everyone’s club so let’s try and move forward together. If you are keen to volunteer in any capacity, please get in touch with me or contact the office.

Finally, the summer is upon is and hopefully you can take advantage of the longer days (once the clouds hopefully disappear!) with the course in fantastic condition and some exciting competitions coming your way, including Championship Week and our Opens. Play as much golf as you can and bring your friends up to enjoy our facilities, whether a round of golf, a drink in the bar, a shot on the driving range or a meal in the restaurant.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ross Duncan | Club Captain

Factory Cup Results & Weekly Round-Up

Factory Cup

The warm weather drew a packed field for Saturday’s Factory Cup team tournament with no fewer than 144 competitors taking part. Temperatures reached the 70’s but the scores plummeted as players took advantage of perfect conditions coupled with a fun scoring format. The that sizzled most in the sunshine were the quartet of Andrew Flannery, Sam Anderson, Rob Wilson and John Dawson, who’s 17-under par total of 124 gave them a one-shot victory over Alan Aiken, Ross Aiken, Kerr Sutherland and their guest. In third place were Ian Connor, Billy Wilson, Grahame Connor and Gerry Crowe on 128 with the all-female grouping of Lorna Rutherford, Sheila Horsburgh, Sheila Cuthbertson and Denise Richards in fourth spot with an excellent score of 12-under par.

If that whetted your appetite, there’s more team golf on Saturday 11 May when the popular David Duthie Texas Scramble takes place. It’s back to individual stroke play this Saturday with the qualifying round for the Captain’s – Vice-Captain’s Trophy, played alongside the Amanda McCullough Memorial Trophy, while the next Scotsdale Monthly Medal takes place on the first Saturday in May. Entry via the usual route on the BRS system – don’t forget to download the App if you haven’t done so already.

Ladies Results

There was a three-way tie in the April Stableford with Marlene Borthwick, Julie Oram and Sheila Horsburgh all scoring 35 points. Congratulations to Sheila who won on the better inward half.

In the first of the season’s SGA Medals, Katie Brackenridge made light of the Baltic conditions to come out on top in the Bronze Division, scoring a commendable 70(21) resulting in a cut in her handicap and promotion to the Silver Division. The Silver Division competitors failed to master the conditions with Patricia Wood running out the winner with a 77(14).

Continuing her steady form since recovering from shoulder surgery, Sheila Horsburgh and partner Lorna Rutherford won the Coronation Foursomes with a fine tally of 37 points, while Susan Brown scored 37 points to lift the Cystic Fibrosis trophy, beating Glynis Reid on the better inward half.

Junior Golf

Ten young golfers contested the David Duthie Trophy last weekend and it proved to be a runaway victory for Frankie Masson, who fired a superb scratch score of 75 – playing off 15! – to card a net 60. The ever-improving Masson is now down to 12 and is certainly a name to look out for this season. Kerr Sutherland edged Ross Aiken for second place on the better inward half after both finished on net 67. Well done boys – keep up the good work.

ClubGolf coaching returns on Sunday, starting at 10am for the P1 – P3 group and an 11am kick-off for the older P4 – S1 group, with all new members welcome.

Top Three Finish for Howie

Darren Howie’s fine early season form continued as he notched an impressive third place finish in the prestigious Battle Trophy, held at the Crail Golfing Society in the East Neuk of Fife. The 20-year-old Scotland international put himself into contention with rounds of 70 and 71 on the opening day and despite a two-over par 74 in the third round, he finished in style with an excellent four-under par 68. That gave him a 72-hole aggregate of 284, seven shots behind winner Josepth Bryce from Bathgate who sealed back-to-back victories in the Scottish Golf Order of Merit’s opening two events. Peebles’ Stephen Roger also performed well, closing with a pair of 71s to end the tournament in a share of twelfth place.

All eyes will be on Darren’s brother Craig who gets his Challenge Tour campaign underway this week at Samsun Golf Club in northern Turkey. Having won the Pro Golf Tour Order of Merit in 2018, the Stobo Castle sponsored golfer is eyeing a place in Europe’s elite and the Turkish Airlines Challenge will be the first step on his season’s journey. Good luck to Craig! You can follow his progress via the European Tour website by clicking the Challenge Tour menu.

New Caterers on the Menu

Don’t forget that our new catering team of Ani and Francesco take the reins on Wednesday 1st May and we look forward to welcoming them to the Peebles Golf Club team. A fantastic new menu is in store for members, visitors and guests alike, with theme nights to follow soon. To book a table for lunch or dinner, please call 01721 720197, or pop into the clubhouse to say hello and make your reservation.
