A Tribute to Kenny Wells

It is with deep sadness that we have our flag at half mast today following the news that JK Wells passed away in Australia this morning.

Kenny was one of the club’s great characters and without doubt one of the most talented players in the club’s history. He won the Club Championship five times in a row between 1968 and 1972, and was also Borders champion on three occasions. One of his finest victories came in the 1978 South East District Championship, beating some of the country’s leading amateur golfers, and was twice a winner of the Thorburn Cup.

He was the life and soul of the party and was a stalwart of the old clubhouse bar, enjoying more than a few beers, debates and the celebratory filling of his many trophies. Many members will have their own fantastic memories and stories of their times with Kenny, in battles on the course and nights out in the bar and he will be very fondly remembered by the crop of juniors and kids growing up at the club in the early 80s.

He was a very welcome guest to the club on his trips ‘home’ with his wife Mags after emigrating to Australia, with his most recent visit just last year (usually shivering in his shorts!).

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Margaret, Suzie, David, Jenny, grandson Gregor and the rest of the family at this very sad time.

RIP JK Wells…a true club legend.
