Stobo So Supportive of Howie

Their catchphrase might be ‘So Stobo’ but the words ‘So Generous’ are more apt with the announcement that Stobo Castle will be one of Craig Howie’s sponsors for the 2019 season.

Recently voted the UK’s best destination spa, Stobo Castle will once again provide Craig with financial backing and full use of their gym and spa facilities for a second year as the Peebles golfer looks to build on a hugely successful debut season as a Tour professional.

Having won the third tier Pro Golf Tour in 2018, the 24-year-old former Peebles High School pupil will embark on the next stage of his golfing journey when the European Challenge Tour gets underway in Turkey in April, with his sights set on joining the big guns on the main European Tour. The top fifteen players in the rankings will gain promotion at the end of the season and having seen former Scotland amateur colleagues Grant Forrest, Bob MacIntyre and Liam Johnston all make the successful transition in recent months, Howie will go into the campaign with high hopes.

“I am delighted that Stobo have committed to getting on board again. Their support over the last 12 months was a huge catalyst for my successful year on the Pro Golf Tour and their backing has been great. The reality is that I wouldn’t be able to travel and compete without their help, so it is hugely appreciated and I am proud to be associated with their brand for another year.”

“The members of Peebles Golf Club have also been very supportive and I know they’re all rooting for me to do well and have someone representing the town at a high level. I’m excited about playing on the Challenge Tour and I can’t wait to get started.”

Craig Howie is pictured with Stobo Castle’s Marketing Manager Jenni Watts

“I played a lot of golf as an amateur at a similar level to Grant, Bob and Liam, as well as Connor Syme who played on the European Tour last season, so it’s been great to see these guys doing so well. It gives me the confidence to know I can compete with the best players on the Challenge Tour and I proved last year that I’ve got what it takes to win as a professional.”

Craig travelled to Barcelona last week as part of his preparations for the new season and finished tied 16th in the Ecco Tour event at PGA Catalunya – his first event of the year – with rounds of 75, 65 and 69. He plans to compete in a few events in Morocco over the next few weeks, before the Challenge Tour gets underway in April, where he’ll travel to the likes of China, Turkey, UAE, Italy and France, as well as closer to home in Ireland, England and hopefully an event in Scotland this summer.

Spaces remain room for others sponsors, so if your company would like to offer your support, please get in touch with the office at Peebles Golf Club on 01721 720197 or e-mail Craig directly on craigr.howie@btinternet.com.

Catering Opportunity at Peebles Golf Club

Peebles Golf Club is a vibrant and family-friendly club with a first class clubhouse facility to match its beautiful golf course. We operate at the heart of the local community with over 800 members across our various categories.

The recent growth in our membership has allowed us to invest in our facilities, including a major clubhouse refurbishment to the bar, lounge, restaurant and kitchen, as well as a new driving range, both of which were completed last year. The club is located close to the town centre, making us a popular venue for food and drink for members and visitors alike, with a busy calendar of weekly golf competitions across all our membership categories which drives footfall into our clubhouse.

We have a very good reputation for customer service and the club’s facilities offer an attractive venue for other events and functions within the community

 A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified team or candidate to work in partnership with the club to provide the following:

  • A full catering service to meet the needs of our members, visitors and other customers;

  • A range of good quality catering to include short order items, breakfasts, bar snacks, light meals and dinners, across our bar, lounge and restaurant;

  • A catering service for member and non-member functions including: competition days, visiting golf parties, club functions, team matches, birthday parties, theme nights, Christmas party nights and potentially also larger functions such as weddings;

  • A flexible and proactive approach to the club’s catering requirements to drive increased traffic into the clubhouse.

The ideal candidate(s) should:

  • Have a proven track record in catering operations, preferably in a golf club or large restaurant environment;

  • Have the manpower to  deliver a consistently high standard of catering product and service to meet the needs of our members and other customers;

  • Be innovative and creative to ensure the club thrives in a highly competitive environment;

  • Be commercially minded to grow clubhouse revenues in partnership with the club’s management team (club manager, bar staff, PGA professional, committee);

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Have a proven record of Food Hygiene and compliance to Safety Standards with working experience of all relevant regulations;

  • Have high personal and professional standards and be able to demonstrate excellent customer service;

  • Be compliant with all pertinent employment regulations relating to its staff and have a proven track record in the management of its staff.

There is a well-equipped kitchen at the club while accommodation may be available within an agreed package for the successful applicant.

To discuss the opportunity in more detail or apply for the role, please contact Niall Watson, Club Manager, on 01721 720197 or e-mail manager@peeblesgolfclub.com. Formal applications must be received by Tuesday 12 February and preferable start for the successful candidate is early April.

Catering Update - Gary Moore Resignation and Appointment of Linda Robertson

It is with regret that I announce the resignation of Gary Moore as the club’s resident caterer.   Gary’s final day will be this Sunday, and we wish him well in his future endeavours.

Thankfully, we’ve been able to secure short-term cover through Linda Robertson who will be taking over the reins from Tuesday 15 January through to the end of March.  Many of you will be familiar with Linda already as she has been working with Gary at the club over the last few months.  Linda also owns her own catering business in Peebles.

Linda and her team will provide catering from 9.30am to 3.00pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays, offering a range of short order items including soup, breakfast rolls, sandwiches, paninis, cakes and scones.  We’ll also be looking at options for evening and Sunday catering, although we’re aware the next three months are generally a quiet period for the club in any case.

Event catering will also be covered during this period, including our Burns Night (Saturday 26 January), Night Golf Event (Saturday 9 February) and Past-Captain’s Dinner (Friday 8 March). The Club remains available for functions and other bookings, so please get in touch with Niall if there is anything we can help you with and he can discuss requirements with you.

We remain committed to providing our members and visitors with a full restaurant and catering service and the Board is now looking at a range of options to ensure a sustainable catering arrangement for the future.  Unfortunately, we’ve now had two established caterers leave the club in fairly quick succession with both unable to generate a sufficient level of business to make it a long-term success.

We still believe the catering opportunity at Peebles Golf Club remains an attractive one, with our recently refurbished clubhouse one of the best venues in town. A vibrant catering service is vital for the health of the club, not only does it improve the ambiance of the clubhouse but the revenue it generates is critical to our economic model, including continued investment in our course and other facilities.

To help enable greater use, one of the options we intend to look at is the potential adoption of an ‘open-door’ policy, which would give non-members greater access to our restaurant, subject to certain restrictions.   Peebles Golf Club prides itself on being at the heart of the local community and while our members will always be our first priority, we would consider providing broader access if we felt this would be to the overall benefit of the club.  Such a policy would need careful consideration of course, and we intend to speak to other clubs that have adopted a similar type of model.

Throughout this process, we’d also like to speak to as many members as possible to help us shape our future plans.  As part of this, we encourage you to send e-mails or phone the club with your thoughts, suggestions and feedback.   Following this consultation process, the Board will then present its recommendations to the members at the AGM on Tuesday 12 February, where we’ll also be inviting a representative from Scottish Golf to help facilitate the session.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of Peebles Golf Club, wish you a Happy New Year and hope you have a successful season on the golf course in 2019!

Kind regards

Ross Duncan - Club Captain

New 2019 Rules of Golf

The changes have been brought in to modernise the game while making the rules more consistent, fair and easier to understand and apply.

In advance of the launch on 1 January 2019, please find a few documents to help explain the changes.

End of Season Captain's Newsletter

It's the end of the golf season so we thought it would be a good time to write  a Captain's Newsletter with a summary of what's taken place over the past six months on and off the course…

> Read the Captain’s Newsletter

“The six and a half months since the end of March seem to have flown by and if the saying ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ is true then it’s been a very enjoyable season on the golf course.”
