Peebles fall at final hurdle

The Peebles team travelled to the West Course at North Berwick for the final match knowing that a victory would secure an unbeaten record this season. Things however did not go according to plan. Peebles won 5-1 in the opening encounter of the season at home but playing links golf gave the hosts a huge advantage.

The visitors lost the first 3 games with Andy Tucker and Neil Byers going down 5&3, Roger Scott and Ewan Morton losing 4&3 and David Wright and Sam Walker losing on the 16th by 3&2.

Vic Roberts and Mike Clay stopped the rot and won impressively by 5&3. In game 5, Les More and Ian Mewett had a very close encounter and managed an honourable half. However, North Berwick finished the match strongly and Jim Dickson and George Cunningham suffered a 6&4 reversal.

The final match result was North Berwick 4 and a half : Peebles 1 and a half.

Despite not being able to round things off in style, it has been a fantastic season for the Peebles Seniors. They have won 8 matches, halved one match and lost one match. A huge thank you to the 24 players who have represented the team this season. We've had a lot of fun!

David Wright.

Honours even at Minto

Following their narrow win at home earlier in the season, members of the Senior Team travelled to Minto with much trepidation.

Peebles started brightly when the  experienced pairing of Roger Scott and Tom Litster won their closely contested game by one hole. Things were a bit easier for Ewan Morton and Neil Byers who had the biggest win of the day by beating their opponents 4&2.

The complexion of the match changed in Game 3 when Brian Robson and David Wright suffered a rare defeat. They were 5 down after 7 holes and despite getting the deficit down to one hole at the 13th they eventually went down 3&2.

Vic Roberts and Andrew Waddell found themselves dormie 3 up before experiencing a very nervy finish . They eventually won their match by one hole to ensure that the Peebles Tean could not be beaten.

Minto finished strongly however by winning the last two games. Stevie Matthews and George Cunninghan lost 3&2 and it was the same score in the last game involving Sam Walker and Malcolm Bruce.

This was a closely contested match played on an excellent course in ideal conditions and it was only fitting that the honours were shared.

Peebles were delighted to extend their unbeaten run this season. Can they finish the season unbeaten when they take on North Berwick in the last match of the season? Watch this space!

Peebles v West Linton

On a beautiful day with the course in magnificent condition the Peebles Seniors took on their local rivals, West Linton in the last home match of the season.

The home team got off to an excellent start with Andy Tucker and Malcolm Bruce enjoying a very good 5&3 victory over away captain Gordon Currie and his partner Harry Donkin. Keith Brunton and Ewan Morton found themselves dormie 3 down and despite winning 16 and 17 could only halve the last hole to lose the match 1 down.

Home captain David Wright and his partner Brian Robson outplayed their opponents for a 5&4 victory and in game 4 Stephen Matthews and Roger Scott won at the 15th by 5&3.

The Peebles team finished the match strongly when Ian Pemberton and Ian Mewett recorded a 4&3 victory and Andrew Waddell and Sam Walker edged out their opponents by 2&1.

In what promised to be a very close match, the Peebles team played extremely well and won comprehensively by 5 points to one.

The Seriors go into their last 2 matches of the season at Minto and North Berwick with their unbeaten record intact - 8 wins out of 8.

Glencorse Whitewashed!

Peebles Seniors had a spectacular 6-0 victory over local rivals Glencorse to maintain their unbeaten run this season.

4 players - Ewan Morton, Tom Swanston, Geoff Lawson and Malcom Bruce - made their Senior Team debuts in this match.

Andy Tucker and Andrew Waddell won the first game by 2 & 1 and Neil Byers and Ewan Morton quickly followed this up with a 3& 1 victory.

David Wright and Brian Robson found themselves one down at the turn but a strong showing on the back nine resulted in a 3&2 win for the home pair. Biggest victory of the day came in game 4 where Tom Swanston and Jim Lyle comprehensively beat their opponents by 5&3.

Ian Mewett and Ian Pemberton returned to winning ways with a 4&3 victory and the 'rookie' pairing of Geoff Lawson and Malcolm Bruce completed the match with a fine 3&1 victory.

Peebles Team maintains 100% record

The Seniors' Team continued their unbeaten run with a narrow win at home to Torwoodlee.

The home team got off to a great start by winning both of the opening two games. Gordon Fisher and Andy Tucker won 4&3 and Neil Byers and George Cunningham overcame their opponents by the same score.

Game 3 was a very close affair. David Wright and Brian Robson were one up at the turn. The next 8 holes were halved but the Torwoodlee pairing of Colin Shanks and John Donoghue won the last hole to square the match.

The biggest win of the day came in game 4 where Sam Walker and David McKean won comprehensively by 6&4. David was in scintillating form and recorded a 2 under par round.

Most unusually, Ian Mewett and Ian Pemberton failed to win their game. Despite being 3 up at one point they lost by one hole.

The final pairing of debutant Stephen Matthews and Alan Jackson had a torrid time and lost their game 5&4.

Overall match score: Peebles 3 and a half points - Torwoodlee 2 and a half points.

The next match for the Senior Team will be away to Torwoodlee on Monday 25th July. The team sheet will be posted at noon on Monday 11th July. Brian Robson will captain the team for this match.

Narrow win for Peebles against Minto

Seniors` matches against Minto are usually close affairs and the home match this year proved to be no exception.

Sam Walker and Gordon Fisher got he home team off to a good start with a 3&1 win. Sam was in excellent form being nett 28 at the turn which included a spectacular eagle on the 9th. Andrew Waddell and David McKean were just edged out 2&1 by the strong Minto pair that included the former scratch golfer Iain Oliver.

David Wright and Brian Robson enjoyed a very close match and won by one hole courtesy of a chip in by Brian on the 18th.

Parity in the match was restored when the home pairing of Donald Jamie and Jim Lyle lost narrowly to their opponents. Match 5 ended all square when debutant John Brown and Neil Byers  lost the final hole.

With the match all square the overall result hinged on the outcome of the final group. Once again the two Ians, Pemberton and Mewett, did not disappoint and they emerged victorious by 3&1 to push the Peebles team over the finishing line.

The match took place in glorious weather with the course looking absolutely fantastic. The Minto players all commented on just how good our course was.

Overall result : Peebles 3 and half points - Minto 2 and a half points.

Narrow Victory at Broomieknowe.

The Peebles Team travelled to Broomieknowe for their second away match of the season.

The first pairing of Gordon Fisher and Neil Byers lost narrowly 2&1 before the home team went further ahead when Ken Morrison and Walter Forsyth went down heavily 6&5.

David Wright and David Barr steadied the ship by winning 2 up in a very hard fought match. There was nothing between the teams in the fourth match where Sam Walker and Sandy Wood ended up all square with their opponents.

The dependable partnership of Ian Mewett and Ian Pemberton once again proved too strong for the opposition and they ran out worthy winners 6&5.

With everything all square after 5 matches the overall result depended on the outcome of the final match. Graeme Murray and Roger Scott didn't disappoint and they won their match 1 up on the 18th green.

The Peebles team therefore secured a narrow victory by 3 and half points to 2 and a half points.

Great away win for Peebles at St Boswells

On a glorious day on the banks of the Tweed, the Peebles players were in spectacular form against a very strong St Boswells team.

Sandy Wood and Tom Litster, playing in the opening match, couldn't overcome their opponents and had settle for an honourable share of the spoils. Neil Byers and Andew Waddell came up against a high handicapper in excellent form ( not a good combination from the Peebles point of view) and went down 4&3.

David Wright and David McKean were always in charge in their match and ran out worthy winners by 3&1. Biggest win of the day was recorded by Vic Roberts and Sam Walker who trounced their opponents 5&4. Vic still wasn't happy however as he lost a Titleist Pro V1 in the River Tweed.

The Peebles Team finished strongly with two more wins. Ian Pemberton and Ian Mewett ( do they ever lose? ) won 2up and Graeme Murray and Roger Scott won 3&2.

The St Boswells course was in very good condition considering it was under water a few months ago.

Overall result:  St Boswells one and a half points - Peebles four and a half points.

Peebles make a winning start to the season

The Seniors' Team made a winning start to the season against North Berwick.

Opening pair, Andy Tucker and Gordon Fisher, had a hard fought encounter with their North Berwick counterparts with the match finishing all square. In the second pairing , Alan Jackson and George Davidson won the match in spectacular fashion at the 16th hole. George drove to a few feet of the pin but Alan holed his chip from the edge of the green for a two to win the match 3&2. Although they were down at the turn, David Wright and Brian Robson won their match 3&2 against local players Drew Lowe and David Love.

There was very little between the teams in match 4 with Sam Walker and Andrew Waddell finishing all square after 18 holes. The dependable pairing of Ian Pemberton and Ian Mewett once again did the business for the home team with a fine 3&1 victory. The final match of the day saw Graeme Murray and Roger Scott complete an impressive performance by the Peebles team by winning 2&1.

Overall match score: Peebles 5 points- North Berwick 1 point.

TAMS Results for 10th March

Nineteen made the effort to play on a cold and muddy morning. We played on the summer greens which seemed awfully far away after our weeks on the winter greens!

Eric Ward and Brian Robson ( who was wearing his new shoes ) tied for first place with a net 36, which was 3 clear of the field. Eric won on count back. Following earlier comments, Eric has clearly learned to his advantage how to play the last 3 holes. David Wallace was nearest the pin on No 7, which was a long hard hit from the back tee.

Despite playing on summer greens there were no birdies, although there was the usual collection of hard luck stories.

The lads send Bill their best wishes.

February TAMS results

11th February

Roger Keys continued his good winter form with another first. John Forsyth was second. Brian Robson was nearest the pin at the 7th. George Langlands had the only birdie of the morning at the 9th.

18th February

6 hardy souls braved the freezing conditions. The ever youthful Joe Nisbet was first with a net 36 with John Forsyth repeating last week's second place.

25th February

There was a rare but well deserved first place for Peter Barclay with a net 30. Alan Urquhart came second with 33. A surfeit of birdies was provided by Gordon Fisher (2), David Wallace (2) and Brian Robson (1). With all these balls being won I will have to consider raising the entry fees!

This week's report supplied by George Langlands.

TAMS Results up and running again

I have been in Australia for the past 5 weeks so haven't been able to post the latest TAMS results until now.

George Langlands and David Wallace will continue to provide TAMS updates on a weekly basis for posting on the website.

Despite the poor weather, competitions took place on Thursday 21st and Thursday 28th January. Here is David Wallace's account of the proceedings.

Thursday 21st January

This was our first outing of the New Year after lots of rain and snow. A late start followed consultation with the Greenkeeper and 10 souls braved the remnants of snow and winter greens for a Stableford.

Three tied on 17 points - Chris Beaumont, John Forsyth and David Wallace - with Chris taking first place and John second. There is no doubt that Chris's Christmas present of a golf book worked wonders. Not only was he first he added to his ball haul with the 'nearie' on the 7th which he converted into a birdie as well. David Wallace lost out on the the main prizes but did manage a fine birdie on the 3rd.

Thursday 28th January

Despite the relentless rain on the Tuesday/Wednesday, the course was declared playable after an early inspection. 15 took the field for a stroke play competition.

David Wallace was on fine form and won with a net 36, rounded off with a birdie on the 9th         ( which sat on the edge for an eagle ). Brian Robson was a close second with 37 and the rest of the field was 'also ran' in horse racing parlance.

Chris Beaumont learned that golf is a game which allows one a little encouragement now and again but followed always with an almighty put down!
