The Seniors' Blog would like to wish all of its readers ( or perhaps it's just its reader) a very Merry Christmas.
16 souls braved the elements and the dark to play this morning. The winner with a net 34 was Andy Tucker with George Langlands coming second with 36.
Jim McAuslin was nearest the pin at the 7th. Tony Kinder ( a new recruit ) won his first ball by getting a birdie at the 7th.
Only 14 players braved the blustery but dry (no rain) conditions. Bill Hardcastle took the spoils with a net 36. Bill Lord came second with a net 37.
Following the golf a very convivial Christmas lunch was enjoyed by 35 TAMS. The Summer Trophies were awarded as follows.
Summer Handicap Competition - Sandy Macfarlane
Summer Scratch Competition -.David Wallace
Stanley Ridgeway Trophy - Sandy Macfarlane
Roddie Macalpine Gavel - Sandy Macfarlane
Well done Jazz and Yvonne and team for an excellent lunch.
There was a splendid turn out of 20 players this week who competed on the first day of winter greens. Despite the dreadful weather of late, the conditions were quite pleasant, apart from having to chip the ice of our shoes before every shot.
The winner this week was Roger Key who has clearly made the successful transition from the steamy jungles of Botswana to the rather more temperate Peebles climate.
Runner up on 18 points was Eric Ward who edged out David Wallace on a count back. Once Eric learns to play the first 3 holes he will be a weekly contender!
There were no birdies to report this week and no 'nearie' at the 7th due to winter greens.
The reasonable weather conditions were not reflected in the overall quality of the scores today.
The winner with a net 32 was Joe Nisbet with Roger Key coming second with a 33. John Forsyth was nearest the pin at the 7th.
Unusually, no birdies were recorded.
On a lovely mild November day, 24 players were tempted out by the benign weather conditions.
As befitting the day, there were fireworks on the course too!
Andy Tucker led the field with a well-played 23 points, including a high class birdie at the 5th hole. Second with 19 points was that reliable campaigner, Gordon Fisher, whose annual migration to New Zealand has been deferred meantime.
The identity of the winner of the Nearie at No 7 caused some amusement as the initials on the flag indicated that it was a certain Mr 'JSB'. The musical among us jumped to the wrong conclusion as it turned out not to be the great composer but our own Johann Sebastion Burnett.
The new Titleist balls for prizes are much coveted!
The Seniors' team travelled to North Berwick for the last match of the season. The course was in magnificent condition but the strong wind and the super fast greens were very testing.
Peebles got off to great start with Rodger Scott and Graeme Murray mastering the conditions and chalking up a magnificent 6 & 5 victory. Andy Tucker and Alan Jackson then lost narrowly by 2 & 1 to their North Berwick opponents.
David Wright and Brian Robson were 4 up after 10 holes but found themselves one down to the pairing of Jim Ross and Drew Lowe after 17. However they managed to win the last hole to secure an honourable half.
Ian Pemberton and Ian Mewett had a difficult day losing 4 & 3 and despite the lead changing many times throughout their match, Tom Litster and Grant Bowie eventually lost 3 & 2.
Peebles finished on a high note however with Andrew Waddell and Ken Morrison winning by 2 holes.
The Peebles Team therefore went down by 3 and a half points to 2 and a half points but it was a very enjoyable end to the season. In our 9 matches this year we have won 5 and lost 4. A huge thank you to the 32 senior players who have represented the club.
13 hardy souls braved the gales in Peebles this week. Roger Key came first with a credible net 31 given the conditions and he also the birdied the first. A great achievement at the best of times!
Steve Farrar continued his good run and was placed second with a net 33. John Forsyth was nearest the pin at the 7th.
There was a good turnout for a CPR training / defibrillator familiarisation session from Dr Hegarty. Much appreciated from a high risk group.
1st October.
With a personal best of 36 strokes, David Wallace romped home in first place with 24 Stableford points. David also birdied the 7th hole. Harvey Robertson was second on 23 points after countback while John Forsyth birdied the 9th.
8th October.
Steve Farrar was a clear winner with 28 net with Brian Robson coming second with 32. Steve also birdied the 8th Hole. Andy Tucker was nearest the pin at the 7th.
Just completed the 'appearance' statistics for the Seniors' Team for this season. Surprised to find that a total of 32 players have represented the team this season!
There's still time to add your name to the list for the North Berwick match on the 21st October. Please do so before 12 noon on Tuesday 13th October. I'll post the selected team on the Seniors' notice board at 2pm that day.
David Wright
The final Seniors' Match will be against North Berwick (away) on Wednesday 21st October. The team sheet for this match will be posted on the notice board on Tuesday 6th October at 12.30pm.
Tom Litster, who earlier this season achieved 2 holes in one in the same round, rounded off a fantastic season by lifting the Captain and Vice Captain's Trophy.
The top 16 players from an early season qualifying round competed for this trophy throughout the summer in match play format with Tom emerging victorious.
This is the second time Tom has won this trophy with his first victory being a remarkable 53 years ago! ( this was the year the Beatles released their first single and Dr No, the first James Bond film, was released)
Well done Tom - you are an inspiration to all Senior golfers.
The Peebles Seniors had another very close match with Minto this week and were keen to build on their narrow home win earlier in the season.
In ideal conditions the opening match was a close affair with Sandy Burnett and Rodger Scott finishing all square.
Peebles then suffered 3 reversals with Andrew Waddell and David McKean losing 6&4, Brian Robson and Andy Tucker losing 3&1 and Ian Pemberton and Stuart Duncan losing 3&2.
Peebles finished strongly however with George Cunningham and Neil Byers winning their match 2&1 and Vic Roberts and Tom Lister also winning by the same score.
The match score of Minto 3 and a half points , Peebles 2 and a half points was a mirror image of the home win in June. Overall the honours were even over the 2 encounters with our friends from Minto.
The TAMS achieved a great result in last Friday's Sponsor's Day competition.
In first place was the Team led by Steve Farrar ( who most graciously donated a defibrillator to the Club) and supported by Warner Hardie, Sandy Macfarlane and Bill Hardcastle. Well done boys!
In third place was the Team including George Langlands and Richard Edmonds.
There was a modest turnout of 15 players on Thursday 17 September. Eric Ward took a well deserved first place with a net 30 and Jim McAuslin was second with a net 31. Bob Duncan was nearest the pin at the 7th. There were no birdies and no birthdays to report.
